Arlicia Ortiz Lands All CIAA Honors; Three Other Broncos make Second Team

Charlotte, NC – The Fayetteville State University volleyball team will head into the 2017 CIAA Championship Tournament today with four All-CIAA honorees. The tournament will be hosted on the campus of Virginia State University with the opening round beginning at 12 noon. The Championship match will be on Sunday, November 19th at 3:30 pm.

Fayetteville State will face the CIAA Northern Division’s No. 2 Seed Virginia State (10-14 overall, 10-6 CIAA) today at 5 pm.

Senior Arlicia Ortiz (Spanaway, WA) was named First Team All-CIAA as a utility player. The outside hitter has played multiple positions this season which helped the Broncos to a 21-9 season and a No. 3 Seed in the CIAA Southern Division. Ortiz finished the regular season ranked 2nd in the conference with 414 overall digs. She was also graded 3rd in overall total attacks (664) and 6th with 221 kills (2.09 per set). Last season, she garnered Second Team Honors.

Jayde Jacobs, another senior, was named to the All-CIAA Second Team for the second season in a row as a middle hitter/blocker. The Fayetteville, NC native ranks seventh in hitting percentages (.267) and eighth in block assists (46) and points (258). She currently has 190 kills, 31 service aces, 133 digs, and 60 blocks.

Red-shirt sophomore Nia Bell (Elizabeth City, NC) received All-CIAA Second Team honors as an Outside Hitter. Bell has a total of 163 kills, which ranks 16th in the conference, on 496 total attacks. She ranks 14th in digs with 201.



Last season’s CIAA Rookie of the Year Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) was also named to the All-CIAA Second Team as a setter. She leads the team and ranks seventh in the conference with 434 (5.11 per set) in 85 sets.   

As the South’s No. 3 Seed, the Broncos finished the regular season with a 21-9 overall record and a 13-3 conference mark. The three losses of the season are against Southern Division rivalries. FSU lost two games to Winston-Salem State and one to Shaw.

The winner of the FSU/VSU match will advance to the face the winner of the Shaw versus Lincoln (Pa.) match. The semi-final match has a 7 pm start time. All matches will be played in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
