Murfreesboro, NC - Freshman middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson (Laurel Hill, NC) and freshman outside hitter Samantha Meeks (Laurinburg, NC) had a combined total of 110 kills to help the Lady Broncos to a second place finish in the Janet Collins Invitational Volleyball Tournament hosted by Chowan University in the Jesse Helms Center this past weekend. The Lady Broncos improved their overall record to 14-9.
"We have been working hard at practice this week to help improve our level of play," said Coach Elorine Hill. "This weekend the hard work paid off." The Lady Broncos opened play on Friday, getting a 3-0 (30-7, 30-4, 30-8) over Allen University. In the second game of the day, FSU fell to Southern Virginia University in four games (21-30, 30-17, 30-20, 30-28). Jefferson had 23 kills and Meeks had 10 kills.
Saturday, morning, the Lady Broncos opened play with 3-1 (30-23, 28-30, 30-16, 30-14) win over Saint Augustine's College. Fayetteville State University was paced by Jefferson and Meeks with 15 and 11 kills respectively. Achari Mainor (Antioch, CA) had another stellar performance, serving up 43 assists. The Lady Broncos continued their outstanding play, defeating Ohio Valley University 3-2 (25-30, 30-14, 24-30, 30-28, 15-11) to move to the championship round against Southern Virginia University.
In the championship match, it took Southern Virginia five games to get past the determined Lady Broncos. FSU took the first game 30-28, but SVU took the next two 30-28, 30-27. The Lady Broncos battled back to win game four 32-30 to force game five. The Lady Broncos loss the deciding game 19-17.
For her performance, Jefferson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and selected to the All-Tournament Team with her, teammate Sha'Quana Veney (Richmond, VA). Jefferson had .390 hitting percentage, a game high 51 total attacks and 164 total attacked for the tournament. "Our offense was strong and several players had exceptional game," Hill added. "I thought Achari Mainor, Cassandra Peterson (Winston-Salem, NC) and Heather Chance (Dallas, TX) played outstandingly in the tournament."
Besides Jefferson and Meeks, also putting up impressive numbers were Veney with 109 digs, Mainor 183 assists, Chance and Peterson 28 and 23 total blocks respectively. The Lady Broncos return to action October 4th in Spartanburg, SC against USC-Aiken.
