HAMPTON, VA – The Fayetteville State volleyball team closed out pool play in the 2012 CIAA Volleyball Championship with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Virginia State Trojans at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. The Lady Broncos, with the victory, tie the 2007 squad for the most wins in school history with 26.

Fayetteville State improves to 26-5 on the season while the Trojans fall to 14-12 overall. FSU finished pool play with a perfect 3-0 record after victories earlier in the day against Virginia Union (3-0) and Winston-Salem State (3-1).

The contest played out in similar fashion to the initial meeting this season during the CIAA Mini Roundup in Fayetteville. Virginia State captured the first two sets 25-22 and 26-24, but the Lady Broncos regrouped to win the next three sets 25-21, 25-20, 15-13.

Fayetteville State had four players record double-digit kills in Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC), Shavon Shaw (Fr., Bethel, NC), Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) and Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC). Nwokolo finished with a game-high 22 kills, while Shaw set a new career-high with 13. Thompson added 12 kills and Emanuel contributed 11. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) dished out a team-best 36 assists and Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) had 29. The junior duo combined for 65 of the team’s 68 assists.

The Lady Broncos also had five players record double-digit digs led by JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC), who tallied a career-high 40 digs. Nikita Cheadle (Jr., Hope Mills, NC) finished with 22 digs, Farrington 13, Horne 11 and Decausha McLean (Jr., Laurinburg, NC) 10.

Fayetteville State recorded 70 kills as a team, and forced the Trojans into 27 attack errors and seven receiving errors. The Lady Broncos also had nine team blocks.

FSU will now face the second-seed Livingstone College Blue Bears in the second semi-final match at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening. The Lady Broncos defeated Livingstone in both matches this season by 3-0 scores.
