HAMPTON, VA – The Fayetteville State volleyball team opened pool play of the 2012 CIAA Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 victory over the Virginia Union Panthers on Friday morning at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

FSU improves to 24-5 on the season while the Panthers fall to 5-26 overall.

The Lady Broncos, the top seed in Pool B, received a game-high 12 kills from CIAA Player of the Year Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC). Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) and Shavon Shaw (Fr., Bethel, NC) added seven kills each. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) and Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) dished out 14 assists apiece against the Panthers, and JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) had 20 digs.

Virginia Union, the fourth seed from the Northern Division, was led offensively by Kristal Woodard with eight kills and Demi Schrader dished out a team-high 14 assists. Ellie Parsons added 14 digs.

Fayetteville State will face Winston-Salem State, the Southern Division’s third seed, at 3 p.m. in the next round of pool play.
