Charlotte, NC - The Lady Broncos ended Elizabeth City State University's 2007 season with 3-0 sweep (30-26, 30-27, 30-24) of the Lady Vikings in the CIAA Championship semi-final at Grady Cole Center on Friday evening.
The top seeded Lady Broncos will take on Bowie State University Saturday at 5:00 pm. Bowie State defeated Livingstone College in the other semi-final game. The Lady Broncos will be looking to capture their third CIAA Championship. FSU won the title in 1996 and 1998. The championship game will be unique in that the CIAA Player of the Year (Chekimbrell Jefferson), CIAA Coach of the Year (Elorine Hill) and CIAA Rookie of the Year (Bethany Sloat) will all be making their appearance in the title match.
The Coach of the Year honor for Coach Hill is her second since taking over the leadership of the volleyball program 19 years ago, earning the honor in 1998. The victory gives Coach Hill her 25th of the 2007 season, the best in the volleyball program history.
CIAA Player of the Year Chekimbrell Jefferson led the way with a match high 14 kills. Contributing to the Lady Broncos fourth tournament win were Cassandra Peterson with five total blocks, Sha'Quana Veney pinching in 16 digs, Demarius Pankey adding three service aces and Achari Mainor finishing with 39 assists.
The pool A semi-final saw Bowie State University hold-off a determined Livingstone College 3-2 (30-20, 29-31, 17-30, 30-24, 15-12) to advance to the championship match against Fayetteville State University.
