PETERSBURG, VA- The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos topped the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University on their home court in a five set thriller to advance in the CIAA Championship on Sunday afternoon. The win takes the Lady Broncos to the semifinals at Winston-Salem State next weekend where they will work to defend their title.
Joylene Thompson led all scorers in the match with 23 kills in the victory, followed by Samira Lewis with 15 kills for Fayetteville State. Paige Horne tallied 39 assists for the Blue and White while JaMisha Jordan hauled in 29 digs. Dierdre Carter led the effort of the Lady Trojans with 15 kills while Diamond Simpson notched 52 assists.
Virginia State used home court momentum to push past Fayetteville State 25-22 in the first set before falling to the Lady Broncos 25-16 in set two. The Lady Broncos continued to hang on in the third set with a 25-20 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Down but not out, the Lady Trojans battled to sneak past the Lady Broncos 25-20 in set four, forcing a fifth and final set. Fayetteville State jumped out to an early lead in the set and never looked back; edging Virginia State 15-13 in set five to earn the 3-2 match win.
The Lady Broncos improve to 17-7 with the victory while the Lady Trojans slip to 16-10. Virginia State faces Johnson C. Smith for the chance to advance to Winston-Salem State and the CIAA Tournament semi-finals.
