Fayetteville State Sweeps JCSU to Finish the Regular Season 21-9

Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State University (21-9) took on CIAA southern division opponent Johnson C. Smith (15-8) for its final regular-season volleyball match. The Broncos defeated the Golden Bulls in three-straight sets for the sweep, 25-18, 25-13, and 25-14. The match featured only one lead change (an early one) and three tied scores as the Broncos cruised to the victory.

Raven Ousley-Brown (St. Paul, MN) led the Broncos with eight (8) kills. Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) led with a game-high 19 assists and Arlicia Ortiz (Spanaway, NJ) led in digs with 18. Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) added seven (7) kills and eight (8) digs. 

In Capel Arena, in front of 200-plus fans, it was Senior Night for three (3) Bronco volleyball players—Ousley-Brown, Jacobs, and Ortiz. The seniors were honored before the game by Chancellor James A. Anderson and Assistant Athletics Director Dr. LaWanda Miller. Jacobs was accompanied by her mother and father. Ousley-Brown was accompanied by her mother, and Ortiz was accompanied by her mother and brother.

In the third set, Ortiz began with a kill. Fayetteville State raced out to an early 9-4 lead as Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL), Ousley-Brown, Bridgette Nathan (Charlotte, NC) and Teeya McLean (Tacoma, WA) each had a kill before a Johnson C. Smith timeout. The Golden Bulls would close the lead to 9-6 before consecutive kills by Jacobs and Ortiz extended the lead to 12-6. With Fayetteville State leading the set 14-11, Ousley-Brown scored three (3) kills as the Broncos finished the match on a fantastic 11-3 run, including a 6-0 finale to win the third set 25-14. Nathan earned the final point of the match with a kill. Ortiz and Ousley-Brown each had four kills in the third set.



In the second set, the Broncos raced out to an early 4-0 lead with assistance from a Bojo Jada (Jamestown, NC) kill and an Ousley-Brown kill. Up 9-6, the Broncos went on an 11-1 run as the Golden Bulls committed ten (10) errors during the run. Following an FSU timeout with the score 20-10, the Broncos returned with a kill by Jada and two consecutive kills by Jacobs. Afterwards, the second set would end on three consecutive Golden Bulls errors.

The first set ended up being the closest set of the night as Johnson C. Smith drew first blood in the game. A Johnson C. Smith error broke an early 5-5 tie. The Broncos responded with a 4-0 run featuring kills by Nathan and McLean. Later in the game, as the Golden Bulls pulled to within three points with the score at 16-13, kills by Jada and Ousley-Brown sparked a 7-2 run for Fayetteville State. A kill by Teeya McLean won the first set for the Broncos.

McKinnie led with a game-high 19 assists. Avery Shaw (Gig Harbor, WA) contributed ten (10) assists and eight (8) digs and Alexis Hollis (Apex, NC) had 16 digs.

Tonight’s game was the second of a back-to-back game schedule and Fayetteville State’s last regular season match before the CIAA Championship Tournament. The Broncos hope to punctuate their great regular season with a CIAA championship November 17th, in Petersburg, Virginia. The Broncos ranks third with a 13-3 Southern Division record behind Shaw and Winston Salem State.
