PEMBROKE, NC – The Fayetteville State volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule on Wednesday evening with a 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 26-24, 29-27) road victory over the UNC Pembroke Braves at the English E. Jones Center. The Lady Broncos dropped the first set to the Braves, but came back to win the next three by two points each.
Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) led Fayetteville State with 14 kills in the contest, while Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC) added 12. Shavon Shaw (Fr., Bethel, NC) tied her career-high of nine kills and Taylor Norris (So., Fayetteville, NC) had eight. Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) dished out a team-high 27 assists, and JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) recorded 27 digs.
Fayetteville State (22-5) recorded the first three points of the opening set, but after UNCP tied it at 3-3 never led from that point on. The Lady Broncos never trailed by more than three points, but could not get any closer. FSU had 14 kills to UNC Pembroke’s 11, but committed seven attack errors in the set. The Braves recorded only three attack errors. Nwokolo led Fayetteville State in the first set with four kills.
FSU rallied late to win the second set 26-24 and tie the match at one apiece. The Lady Broncos led by as much as three points early in the set at 12-9, but UNC Pembroke (5-22) would go on a 9-4 run to lead 18-14. Fayetteville State tied the set 23-23 after an attack error by Marissa Baker, and then scored the final two points to pick up the set. The Braves led 15-13 in kills but had eight attack errors. Emanuel had a team-high three kills for the Lady Broncos.
The FSU defense was on display in the third set tallying four team blocks and forcing UNC Pembroke into 11 attack errors as it won 26-24. Fayetteville State scored the first six points to start the set and led 15-8 after a kill by Shaw. The Braves came back with a 12-4 run to lead 20-19 after a Sawyer Gray service ace. FSU had 11 kills as a team in the third set, led by Shaw’s four.
Fayetteville State was forced to rally for a second time in the fourth set as it trailed 19-15 after a bad set by Norris. FSU tied the set at 22-22 but UNC Pembroke came right back with consecutive points to lead 24-22. A kill by Emanuel tied the set at 24-24 and the two teams followed by trading points until FSU sat at match point 28-27. Fayetteville State would win the set 29-27 after a ball handling error by Gray. Emanuel posted a team-high seven kills in the fourth set.
The Lady Broncos finished the match with 56 kills on 159 attempts, while the Braves collected 53 kills on 169 attempts. Fayetteville State totaled 10 team blocks, compared to five for UNC Pembroke.
FSU will wrap up its regular season on Monday, Nov. 12 as it travels to face the Saint Augustine’s Falcons at 6 p.m.
