Nov. 6, 2017

Raleigh, NC – Fayetteville State University faced off against volleyball rival Shaw University in a hard-fought battle but yielded sets of 21-25, 23-25, and 26-24. Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) had a match-high 14 kills as the Broncos dropped to 19-9 overall, 12-3 in conference play and 6-3 in the CIAA Southern Division.

Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) finished with 17 assists while Alexis Hollis (Apex, NC) had 22 digs.

FSU had a sluggish start in the first set falling behind 6-1 before its first time out. The Broncos rallied to tie the set at 8-8 and matched Shaw (24-4 overall, 14-1 CIAA, and 8-1 in the Division) play-for-play until the 20-20 mark. From there, the Bears would finish the set 25-21.

The second set would continue with even play until the same 20-20 tie. FSU would advance to a 22-21 lead but a 4-1 run by Shaw would give them a 2-0 set advantage.

Fayetteville State would have a chance in the third set to overcome adversity, despite the 2-0 disadvantage, with a late 18-15 lead; which continued to the 23-20 score. Two kills and a service ace would even the set for the Bears and a blocked Bronco attack and an FSU attack error ended the match; giving Shaw University the win.

Fayetteville State will host Benedict College on Wednesday night in Capel Arena. The Broncos will honor its seniors on Thursday, November 9th against Johnson C. Smith. Both matches will begin at 6:00 p.m.
