FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State volleyball team captured its second consecutive CIAA Southern Division Title Monday evening with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-6) victory over Johnson C. Smith at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos will end the regular season undefeated in CIAA play with a 15-0 record. The 21 victories this season for FSU are the most for fourth-year head coach Reeshemah Johnson. Prior to the match, the university honored its three seniors: Joi Emanuel (Charlotte, NC), Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Greensboro, NC), and Chaquita Jackson (Cove City, NC).

Nwokolo had a team-high 11 kills while Emanuel recorded 10. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) dished out a team-leading 21 assists and JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) added 19 digs. Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) led the Lady Broncos with six service aces.

The FSU defense held Johnson C. Smith (5-18, 2-11 CIAA) to just three kills in the opening set as it used an 18-7 run late to win 25-13. Nwokolo's four kills led the Lady Bronco attack as it outhit the Golden Bulls .458 (13 kills, 2 errors, 24 attempts) to -.182.

Fayetteville State won the second set by a score of 25-13 behind six kills from Emanuel. The Lady Broncos hit .400 as a team in the set and took advantage of Horne's four service aces. Johnson C. Smith had just seven kills on 33 attempts in the set as it posted a .061 hitting percentage.

FSU recorded the first 13 points to open the third set. The Lady Broncos won it by a score of 25-6 to clinch the match. The Golden Bulls managed just one kill on 24 attempts in the set as Fayetteville State had 16 digs as a team. Nwokolo led the Lady Broncos on offense with five kills.

 

 

Fayetteville State will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 7 as it travels a short distance down I-95 to face rival UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m. It will be the final preparation before the CIAA Championship Tournament.
