COLUMBIA, SC – The Fayetteville State volleyball team had three players record double-digit kills on Wednesday evening as it picked up a 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 25-14) road victory against the Benedict Tigers at George Glymph Arena. Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) recorded a career-high 14 kills against the Tigers, while Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) and Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) had 13 each.
The Lady Broncos improve to 20-5 on the season while Benedict falls to 12-9. With the win, FSU completes the season sweep of the Tigers as it won the first meeting in Fayetteville 3-0 on Oct. 16.
Thompson, Emanuel and Hardy combined for 40 of FSU’s 63 team kills in the contest. Taylor Norris (So., Fayetteville, NC) and Shavon Shaw (Fr., Bethel, NC) added nine kills each. The nine kills by Shaw are a new career-best for her while Norris matched her career-high. Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) dished out a team-high 32 assists and Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) contributed 25. JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) recorded 16 digs to improve her streak of consecutive matches with double-digit digs to 14.
Fayetteville State committed just seven attack errors on 118 attempts while its defense held Benedict to 32 kills on 108 attempts. The Tigers also had 22 attack errors. The Lady Broncos also took advantage on the serve with 11 service aces, and on defense with 30 blocks (10 solo and 20 assisted). Emanuel led the team with 13 blocks (eight solo and five assisted). Benedict finished with two service aces and 11 total blocks (three solo and eight assisted).
Fayetteville State will return to action on Monday, Nov. 5 as it hosts Johnson C. Smith on Senior Night. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
