Joylene Thompson Had Nine Kills Against Shaw

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State volleyball returned from an eight-day break to sweep Shaw 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-20) in CIAA Southern Division play on Monday evening at Felton J. Capel Arena. The Lady Broncos received a team-high nine kills from Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) as they complete the season sweep of the Bears.
Fayetteville State improves to 19-5 overall and 14-0 in the league, while the Bears fall to 10-15 on the season and 5-10 in conference play. FSU also remains unbeaten in Southern Division play at 8-0 with two conference matches remaining. The Lady Broncos currently hold a two-game lead over second place Livingstone College.
Thompson has now recorded nine kills in three straight matches for FSU, and has led the team offensively in each of them. Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) contributed eight kills while Taylor Norris (So., Fayetteville, NC) added six. Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) dished out a team-high 22 assists and JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) had 18 digs.
Fayetteville State controlled the opening set recording the first 12 points en route to a 25-13 win. Shaw managed just eight kills and committed nine attack errors in the first set.
The Bears fought back in the second set leading by as much as three points at 12-9. The Lady Broncos responded by finishing the set on a 16-7 run to prevail 25-19.
The Lady Broncos held off a late rally by the Bears to take the final set 25-20. FSU led by seven at 17-10 midway through the set, but Shaw rallied to trim its deficit to 23-20 after going on a 10-6 run. Fayetteville State held off the charge to record the final two points of the set.
FSU finished with 39 kills on 93 attempts, while the Bears recorded 26 on 83 attempts. The Lady Broncos had seven service aces and eight total blocks in the match. Shaw managed just two service aces and six blocks.
Fayetteville State will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 31 as it travels to Columbia, SC to face the Benedict Tigers at 6 p.m. The Lady Broncos will look to go for the season sweep of the Tigers as they won the first match between the two teams 3-0 in Fayetteville on Oct. 16.
