FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Lady Broncos volleyball team was riding a 27-game win streak in Capel Arena prior to facing off against UNC Pembroke. The stand was initiated on October 1, 2010 when FSU defeated Shaw 3-0.
Tonight and 26 home games later, the Braves of UNCP (11-12 overall) defeated Fayetteville State (10-7 overall) 3-1 to snap the run. UNCP took early advantage with a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 and 25-16 win. The Lady Broncos struck back in the third set with a 25-20 victory. After a valiant effort, UNC Pembroke surged ahead in the fourth set with a 25-18 win.
Samira Luis finished with a double-double in the effort with 11 kills and 12 digs. With two service aces, Luis accounts for 13.5 of FSU's 46 points. Taylor Norris gave assist with eight kills and nine points as Joylene Thompson had 7.5 points with seven kills. Shavon Shaw also finished with seven kills which accounts for seven points.
The first set was played evenly; until UNCP advance on two 4-0 runs to increase its lead from 17-13 to 22-15. After three attack errors by the Braves, FSU closed the gap to 23-24 but surrendered the set with a ball handling error.
UNC Pembroke finished the second set with four more kills (12-8) than FSU and four unanswered service aces.
Fayetteville State dug deep in the third set to pull out the victory. The Lady Broncos gained an early 15-6 lead and held strong when UNCP climbed within two at 20-18. After a much needed time out by Coach Johnson, FSU closed out the set with a 5-2 run and the 25-20 win.
FSU managed the first fourth of the fourth set with a 10-7 lead. After three committed errors, UNCP gained the lead at 14-13 and never relinquished it.
Sara Bower led UNC Pembroke with 13 kills while Caroline Pridgen finished with ten.
