FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State volleyball team recorded 42 total kills on 96 attempts Tuesday evening as it picked up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-14) non-conference victory over the Benedict Tigers at Felton J. Capel Arena. Taylor Norris (So., Fayetteville, NC) led the Lady Bronco offense for the first time this season with nine kills.

FSU improves to 17-3 on the season and is now just three wins shy of matching its 20-win campaign from last season. The Tigers drop to 11-7 with the loss.

Norris’ nine kills against Benedict breaks her previous career-best of seven, which was set in Fayetteville State’s previous match with Livingstone on Oct. 15. Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) added eight kills in the contest, while Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) contributed seven. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) dished out 19 assists against the Tigers, and JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) recorded 14 digs.

The Lady Broncos posted strong showings in every facet of the game as they recorded 13 service aces and 12 block assists. Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) had a team-high seven service aces and four block assists, and added six kills and three digs in the process.

Fayetteville State won the opening set 25-21 led by Thompson’s four kills. The Lady Broncos used a 9-4 run midway through the set, but the Tigers made a late rally reeling off four straight points after being down 24-17. FSU would win the first set on a Benedict service error.

Norris and Shavon Shaw (Fr., Bethel, NC) combined for seven of Fayetteville State’s 14 kills in the second set as it won 25-19. The Lady Broncos trailed early, but after Shaw’s kill tied it at 10-10, they never looked back. FSU went on a 10-5 run after that to lead 20-15, and Shaw recorded the final two points to take the set.

Fayetteville State’s defense held Benedict to just seven kills in the third set as it won 25-14 to capture the match. Thompson, Norris and Hardy recorded three kills each as FSU led the entire set. After holding a 10-8 advantage following Ifeyinwa Nwokolo’s (Sr., Greensboro, NC) first kill of the match, the Lady Broncos finished out on a 15-6 run. Fayetteville State won the match after a service error by Ashley Jackson.

FSU will hit the road this weekend as it participates in three matches at the Mount Olive College Classic. The Lady Broncos will face host Mount Olive, who they defeated 3-0 earlier this season, on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m.
