Joylene Thompson had eight kills and 16 attacks

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State now trials Winston-Salem State (11-9 overall, 10-2 CIAA, 5-1 Division) by one Southern Divisional game after the Lady Broncos swept tonight's matchup 3-0 (25-18, 27-25 and 25-21) in Felton J. Capel Arena.
Joylene Thompson (Spanish Town, JA) and Samira Luis (Willemstad, Curacao) had eight kills each to lead the Lady Broncos to a 10-6 overall, 8-4 CIAA, and 4-2 divisional record. Shavon Shaw (Bethel, NC) followed with seven kills of her own. Shaw and Luis had 20 total attacks each as Thompson finished with 16. Paige Horne (Southern Pines, NC) put-up 16 set assists along with Molly Farrington's ten. Luis also led the game with four service aces.
Katelyn Wensley (Advance, NC) led the Lady Rams with eight kills on 30 attacks. Kayla Brass (Elk Grove, CA) handled the setting responsibilities with 20 set-assists.
Fayetteville State jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set and increased it to 21-12 before the final set reached 25-18. FSU won with 13 total kills and 30 attacks. WSSU also had the same amount of attacks; but committed one extra attack error than the Broncos (6-5) and could only muster up ten kills. FSU had three service aces compared to one of the Lady Rams. Samira Luis led with four kills and two service aces on the set.
The second match drew out longer as Winston-Salem State remained in close proximity with the Lady Broncos. The set was tied 14 times with WSSU leading three times; but having its last advantage at 15-14 before conceding 27-25. Winston-Salem State held the advantage in kills at 10-to-8, but the two service-aces by FSU proved to be critical. The Lady Broncos also had two more digs (17-15) than WSSU. FSU committed ten errors to help keep its opponent in the match.
The third and final set continued to be a closely played. It was up for grabs until Fayetteville State advanced on a 9-3 run. Down 21-17, WSSU climbed within one, 21-20, but stalled out as the Lady Broncos finished the set with a 5-1 route to the sweep.
Fayetteville State will host UNC Pembroke in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday (October 16) night in Felton J. Capel Arena at 7:00 pm.
