WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos picked up a key CIAA Southern Division victory on Thursday night with a hard fought 3-2 win over the Winston-Salem State Rams at the C.E.Gaines Center. The Lady Broncos defeated the Rams by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 25-27, 15-13. Three different FSU players recorded at least 10 kills in the contest, led by Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC) with 18.
Fayetteville State improves to 15-3 on the season and 12-0 in conference play, while Winston-Salem State falls to 5-16 overall and 5-7 in the league. FSU also moves to 6-0 in division play and WSSU drops to 2-3.
Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) and Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) also had 10 or more kills against the Rams. Hardy, who has now recorded double-digit kills twice this season against WSSU, finished the match with a season-high 14 while Emanuel added 11. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) and Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) combined for 55 assists in the contest as Farrington dished out 30 and Horne 25. JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) also set a new season-high for most digs in a five-set match with 30.
The Lady Broncos and Winston-Salem State traded sets back-and-forth in the match with all but one set being decided by four points or less. Fayetteville State captured the first, third and fifth sets, while the Rams won the second and fourth sets. The first meeting this season between the teams also went down to the wire. Winston-Salem State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Fayetteville on Sept. 10, but the Lady Broncos rallied to win the final three sets and capture their conference opener.
Nwokolo’s five kills in the first set paced the Fayetteville State offense as neither team lead by more than three points. The Lady Broncos took advantage of two Rams mistakes late in the set to take a 22-20 lead, but Winston-Salem State scored the next two points to tie the set at 22-22. Fayetteville State captured the opening set 25-23 on two WSSU service errors and a kill by Hardy.
Winston-Salem State held an 18-12 lead midway through the second set, but the Lady Broncos rallied to trim their deficit to 24-21. FSU would not be able to get any closer as the Rams evened the match with a 25-21 set two win. Nwokolo and Hardy finished the set with a team-high four kills each.
Fayetteville State, aided by an 18-7 run and four kills by Nwokolo, won the third set in convincing fashion 25-14. Winston-Salem State responded to take the fourth set 27-25 as neither team held a lead of more than three points. Emanuel and Nwokolo had a team-best four kills in the set for the Lady Broncos. FSU lead for all but three points in the fifth set as it clinched the match with a 15-13 win. Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) led the team with three kills in the deciding set.
Fayetteville State will return to action on Monday, Oct. 15 as it hosts Livingstone College at 6 p.m.
