ORANGEBURG, SC – Fayetteville State right side Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) recorded a season-high 12 kills against Claflin on Monday evening, but the Lady Broncos would fall 3-1 (16-25, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25) to the Panthers in non-conference volleyball action at the Jonas T. Kennedy Center.
Fayetteville State falls to 14-3 on the season after suffering its first defeat in the last seven games, while Claflin improves to 12-8 with the victory.
Thompson was the only Lady Bronco to record double-digit kills in the contest, while Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC) tallied nine kills and Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) added seven kills. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) and Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) each dished out 18 assists in the contest, and JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) had a game-high 21 digs.
Chelcey Foster led the Panthers on offense with 12 kills, while Katherin Fischer had 21 assists. Three different Claflin players recorded double-digit assists against Fayetteville State, led by Fischer’s 16.
The Lady Broncos never held a lead in the opening set as they were tied 2-2 to begin the set, but then saw the Panthers go on a 13-2 run to go ahead 15-4. Claflin held off a late charge by Fayetteville State as it fought back to trail 17-11, which led to a timeout by the Panthers. The Lady Broncos then scored the next three points to trim their deficit 17-14, but Claflin responded by going on an 8-2 run to take the first set 25-16.
Fayetteville State quickly fell behind 4-0 to open the second set against the Panthers, but would later take its first lead of the match at 13-12 after a kill by Thompson. Both teams traded the lead back and forth throughout the set, until Claflin went ahead 21-18 after a service ace by Lydia Wise. The Lady Broncos made it 21-20 after an attack error by Jalessa Harper, but that would be as close as they got as the Panthers recorded the final four points to take the set 25-20.
The third set belonged to Fayetteville State as it came back from a 3-0 deficit early to lead by as much as six points at 15-9. The Lady Broncos led 17-12 midway through the set, but Claflin came back to trim its deficit to 18-16. Fayetteville State would hold off the run by the Panthers to capture its first set of the match 25-19.
Claflin ran out to a 7-2 lead to begin the fourth set against the Lady Broncos, and then later held a 15-9 advantage. Fayetteville State, trailing 20-14 late in the set, responded to cut the Panthers lead to 20-18 after a kill by Thompson. The Lady Broncos then made it 24-23 after an attack error by Claflin, but the Panthers would come out after a timeout break to score the final point to take the set 25-23, and win the match over Fayetteville State.
The Lady Broncos will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 11 as they return to conference play with a road contest at Winston-Salem State. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
