(FAYETTEVILLE, NC - October 6) Fayetteville State University Broncos (13-6) took on Claflin University Panthers (4-11) in a nonconference women's volleyball game.

At home in Capel Arena, the Broncos swept Claflin in three straight sets, making this the seventh win in a row for the Broncos.

"One of our primary goals is to win at home, which we did. That's always important," said head volleyball coach Reeshemah Johnson

Arlicia Ortiz's (Spanaway, WA) 9 kills and 9 digs and Ziyanna Canty's (Charlotte, NC) 13 assists helped the Broncos win 25-19, 25-21, and 25-15. Raven Ousley-Brown (St. Paul, MN) provided 7 kills, Avery Shaw (Gig Harbor, WA) had 11 assists, and Paige Clark (Milton, GA) had 12 digs tonight.

Tonight's game featured 11 tie scores and 5 lead changes.  In the final set, two consecutive kills by Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) assisted by Canty broke the tie score of 6 to 6. Three kills (two by Jacobs and one by Ousley-Brown) extended a Broncos lead to 9-6.  The Broncos built their lead to 14-10 before a Claflin timeout. After the timeout, an 11-5 run by the Broncos cemented the sweep as Claflin committed an attack error to end the game.

The second set (25-21) proved to be the most eventful as there were 7 tie scores and 2 lead changes. The Broncos raced out to an early 5-1 lead against the Panthers before Claflin rallied back to tie it for the first time in the second set at 6-6. Claflin then took the lead due to a Broncos attack error. The Panthers would hold on to the lead, extending it to 10-14. However, two kills by Ortiz tied the game at 14-14. Claflin would regain the lead again before the Broncos tied it at 16-16. The Broncos took the lead on a Claflin attack error. Tied at 19-19, the Broncos went on 6-2 run to close out the second set. The 6-2 run featured a 3-0 Broncos finish as Nia Bell (Elizabeth City, NC) scored two consecutive kills and Chynna Hunt (Summerville, SC) scored the game point kill.

The first set saw the Broncos rush out to a 10-4 lead, punctuated by three Ortiz kills, and a kill from Ousley-Brown and Hunt. The Claflin Panthers did, however, close the lead to 10-8, thanks to three Broncos attack errors. Two kills by Ousley-Brown and a kill by Shaw put the score at 15-10. The score widened up to 23-15, after four consecutive Claflin attack errors. Two consecutive kills by Ousley-Brown ended the first set as the Broncos picked up its 24th and 25th points. The first set saw only one tied score and only one lead change. The sole lead change occurred after Claflin's initial point.

Next up on FSU's horizon? The defending CIAA champions Shaw University.

Coach Johnson said of the upcoming game: "It's a big game. At home, against the defending champs, Shaw. It's always a big game. I'm looking for [the Broncos] to step up the intensity and bring it."
