RALEIGH, NC – Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) tallied a team-high seven kills on Thursday evening as the Fayetteville State volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-16, 25-18) over the Shaw Bears at Spaulding Gym in CIAA action.
The Lady Broncos improve to 14-2 on the season and 11-0 in conference play, while the Bears fall to 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the league.
Hardy finished the match as one of three Fayetteville State players to record five or more kills as Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) and Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) each collected five. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) dished out a team-leading 14 assists in the contest, while JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) had 16 digs.
Sashane Watson led Shaw offensively with seven kills, while Crystal Gordon had six. Courtnee Kelly added 20 assists, and Watson finished with a team-high nine digs.
The Lady Broncos trailed three times in the opening 11 points, but took the lead at 7-6 and never relinquished it en route to a 25-16 first set win.
The Lady Broncos won the second set by a score of 25-16. Fayetteville State led the entire set, and began it by jumping out to a 6-2 lead to open the set. The Bears trimmed their deficit to 8-7, but the Lady Broncos would close out the set on a 17-9 run.
Fayetteville State ran out to a 4-1 lead to begin the third set. Shaw would take a 13-10 lead midway through, and then later led 16-13. The Lady Broncos fought back to finish the match on a 12-2 run and take the final set 25-18.
Fayetteville State will return to the court on Monday, Oct. 8 as it travels to Orangeburg, SC to face Claflin at 6 p.m. in non-conference play.
