FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Fayetteville State middle blocker Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) and middle hitter Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC) each recorded 12 kills on Tuesday evening as the Lady Broncos won their sixth match in a row with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) over Mount Olive at Felton J. Capel Arena.
Fayetteville State improves to 13-2 on the season, while the Trojans fall to 7-9 with the loss.
Emanuel and Nwokolo combined to record half of the Lady Broncos’ kills against Mount Olive, while Nikita Cheadle (Jr., Hope Mills, NC) had seven kills and Taylor Norris (So., Fayetteville, NC) added six. Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) dished out a team-high 23 assists in the contest, and Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) collected 18 assists. JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) also contributed a team-leading 13 digs.
Carly White led the Trojans on offense with eight kills in the contest, while Nicole Karas had 15 assists and Nicole Sparks tallied 10 digs.
Mount Olive opened the match by scoring the first four points of the opening set against Fayetteville State, but the Lady Broncos settled in to tie the set at 5-5 after Emanuel and Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) teamed up to block a Sarah Robertson attack. Fayetteville State then went on a 10-4 run to lead 15-9 midway through the set, and cruised to a 25-18 first set win.
The Lady Broncos trailed again to start the second set against the Trojans 5-2 after an attack error by Nwokolo. Fayetteville State the responded to go on a 10-2 run to regain its lead over Mount Olive 10-7, and never relinquished the lead as it went on to a 25-19 victory in set two.
FSU’s defense stepped up in the third, and final, set holding the Trojans to just six total kills while it collected 15 kills. The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 3-2 lead to start the third set, but Mount Olive would go ahead 11-9 after a kill by Ashlee Reuter. Fayetteville State’s defense then held the Trojans in check as it finished off with a 16-7 run to win the third set 25-18 and capture the match over Mount Olive.
The Lady Broncos will step back into CIAA play on Thursday, Oct. 4 as they travel to Raleigh, NC to face the Shaw Bears at 6 p.m.
