Final Stats

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – For the second consecutive match the Fayetteville State volleyball team rallied to win in five sets, this time defeating the Virginia State Trojans 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 16-25, 26-24, 19-17) on the final day of its CIAA Mini Roundup at Felton J. Capel Arena.

The Lady Broncos improve to 12-2 on the season and 10-0 in conference play with the victory, while the Trojans fall to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in the league.

Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC), for the second straight match, set a new career-high for most kills in a five-set match as she recorded 27, while Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) and Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) each had nine kills. Jessica Hardy (So., Fayetteville, NC) also had eight kills for Fayetteville State. Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) dished out a team-leading 29 assists against Virginia State, and Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) had 28 assists. A total of five Lady Broncos collected double-digit kills in the contest led by JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC), who had 22.

The Trojans had three players who posted 10 or more kills in the contest as Whitley Bradley and Aubree Parker both had 16 kills, and Nikkisha Walker tallied 15 kills. Jasmine Henderson posted a team-leading 57 assists, while Virginia State also had five players record double-digit kills. Walker finished the game with a team-high 23 digs for the Trojans.

Fayetteville State trailed all but once in the opening set at 4-3 to Virginia State, but would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the set leading by as much as eight points at 22-14. The Trojans rallied late in the set to make it 23-19, but the Lady Broncos would capture the first set 25-20.

Virginia State responded by leading the entire second set over Fayetteville State highlighted by a 7-2 run to open the set. The Lady Broncos rallied to trail 24-23 late in the set after once trailing 23-18, but a kill from Bradley gave the Trojans a 25-23 set two win. Virginia State controlled the third set opening with an 11-5 run and cruised to a 25-15 set three victory, and go ahead in the match 2-1.

Fayetteville State held a 15-9 margin midway through the fourth set against the Trojans, but Virginia State rallied to tie the set at 24-24 after a kill by Parker. The Lady Broncos then used a kill from Nwokolo and attack error from Jasmine Davis to take the fourth set 26-24 and force a fifth, and deciding, set.

The Trojans held the momentum for a majority of the fifth set and went into match point with a 14-10 advantage over Fayetteville State. The Lady Broncos then scored the next four points to tie the set 14-14. The two teams traded match points twice before Fayetteville State received a kill from Emanuel and service ace from Thompson to complete the come-from-behind victory.

The Lady Broncos will remain at home for their next match on Tuesday, Oct. 2 against Mount Olive. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
