FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State volleyball team opened play on day one of its CIAA Mini Roundup with back-to-back victories over Elizabeth City State and Chowan. The Lady Broncos defeated the Vikings 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 26-24) and 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-11) against the Hawks.
Fayetteville State improves its record to 11-2 on the season and 9-0 in conference play. Elizabeth City State drops to 7-6 overall and 6-2 in conference action, while Chowan’s record is now 11-4 overall and 9-1 in CIAA play.
Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Sr., Greensboro, NC) had a game-high 16 kills against the Vikings, which made it her sixth match this season in which she has recorded double-digit kills. Joylene Thompson (Jr., Spanish Town, JA) added eight kills for the Lady Broncos, while Molly Farrington (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) and Paige Horne (Jr., Southern Pines, NC) combined for 35 assists. Farrington finished the match with 20 kills and Horne with 15. Fayetteville State also had two players compile double-digit digs as JaMisha Jordan (Jr., Fayetteville, NC) had 13 and Decausha McLean (Jr., Laurinburg, NC) recorded 11. Jordan also had three service aces.
Whitney Green had a team-high 10 kills and 10 digs for Elizabeth City State, while Danielle Kiser dished out 15 assists. Kyla Shute also added seven assists.
Nwokolo followed her performance against the Vikings by recording a career-high 22 kills in a come-from-behind victory over the Hawks. She eclipses her previous career-high of 18 kills, which was set earlier this season against Winston-Salem State. Joi Emanuel (Sr., Charlotte, NC) also contributed a season-high 13 kills as the Lady Broncos compiled a season-high 61 kills as a team. Horne and Jordan both recorded new career-highs against Chowan as Horne dished out 27 assists and Jordan had 29 digs.
The Hawks had three players with double-figure kills as Monica Ruffin had a team-leading 16 kills, while Nikira Fults had 14 and Karina Monroe 13. Callie Armistead collected 47 assists, and Cindy Ehrich had a team-high 25 digs. A total of five Chowan players, including Ehrich had 10 or more digs in the contest.
Fayetteville State will wrap up its play in the CIAA Mini Roundup on Sunday, Sept. 30 with a 9 a.m. matchup against Virginia State.
