Fayetteville State Broncos Sweeps Mt. Olive 3-0 in front of Bronco Madness

Sept. 19, 2017

Final Stats

Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State University previously faced off against the Trojans of the University of Mount Olive on September 8th in the USC Aiken Volleyball Invitational. Well, let's say the Trojans (5-6 overall) had the upper hand with a 3-2 victory in the Broncos second game of the season.

Tonight in Capel Arena, it was a horse of a different color. Bronco Madness was in full effect, as a crowd of 300+ students and fans gathered to cheer Fayetteville State (6-4 overall) to a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 28-26, 25-12).

FSU jumped to an early 6-3 lead after two Ziyanna Canty (Charlotte, NC) service aces. Before you could blink twice, the Broncos executed a 10-4 run to force the Trojans into a timeout and a 16-7 score. The momentum would continue for FSU as the lead increased to 21-9. A change of play would help Mt. Olive to a 22-15 deficit and a Fayetteville State timeout. After a brief charge by Head Coach Reeshemah Johnson, Bojo Jada (Jamestown, NC) and Raven Ousley-Brown (St. Paul, MN) would put down kills to end the set at 25-15.

The second set would seem to be never-ending as both teams played to the atmosphere. Throughout the set, no one could seem to grab the advantage with 11 score ties and three (3) lead changes. As the set knotted at 25-25, Cyerra Carter served up an ace for the Trojans and a one-point advantage; but, a resounding kill by Nia Bell set the game back at an even tilt. Canty, who had just set-up Bell for the point, set a ball for a Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) kill and the 28-26 victory point for Bell.

The third set would be more of a breeze for the Broncos, as Bojo Jada collected four (4) of her seven (7) kills and one (1) of her four (4) blocks. Arlicia Ortiz (Spanaway, WA) and Bridgette Nathan each added three (3) kills.

Mt. Olive finished the set with seven (7) kills and eight (8) attack errors while Fayetteville State had 13 kills and one attack error.

Raven Ousley-Brown and Nia Bell (Elizabeth City, NC) joins Jada with seven (7) kills for the match. Nathan finished with six (6) while Ortiz had five (5). Canty had a total of 16 assists and was followed by Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) who had 13.

Fayetteville State will travel to Winston-Salem State on Thursday, September 21 for its first divisional match and return to Capel Arena on Friday for a non-conference match-up against Saint Andrews. The match against the Rams will start at 7 p.m. while the first serve in Capel Arena will be at 6 p.m.
