Fayetteville, NC - Two divisional leaders met on court one at Capel Arena to determine who was the best team in town and Fayetteville State University's Lady Broncos came out on top beating the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University 3-1 (30-26, 30-23, 22-30, 30-28). The win left them one short of sweeping the CIAA East-West Roundup.
Freshman middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson led all scorers with 24 kills and two service aces. The 24 kills were a season high and helped improve the Lady Broncos to 9-6 overall and 6-0 in the CIAA. Achari Mainor, a freshman setter provided a double-double, getting 47 assists and 11 digs. During the two day event the Antioch, CA native had 170 assists. Senior middle blocker Cassandra Peterson continued her hot pace, grabbing 12 kills and five total blocks. The Lady Vikings fall to 8-5 for the season.
In the final game of the evening for the Lady Broncos, Chekimbrell Jefferson once again proved she is a serious candidate for the All-Conference Team; getting 15 kills and the Lady Broncos swept their opponents in the CIAA East-West Volleyball Roundup. Jefferson has tallied up 95 kills for the two day tournament. This is the first time that the Lady Broncos have gone undefeated in the event.
The 3-0 (30-16, 30-16, 30-19) sweep of Virginia State University improved the Lady Broncos record to 10-6 overall and extended their winning streak to seven. FSU will return to action Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at Capel Arena against Shaw University.
