Fayetteville State Went the Distance but Fell Short 3-2 to Mt. Olive

Aiken, SC -- Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team travel to Aiken, SC to participate in the University of South Carolina at Aiken's Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Broncos (1-1 Overall) went the distance of five sets against the University of Mount Olive but fell short in the final set 15-11 for the 3-2 loss.

Fayetteville State opened the tournament with an early 9-5 lead over Mount Olive but watched it diminish as the Trojans closed the gap to 12-11 and eventually win the set with a 25-19 win.

Mount Olive would sustain their momentum into the second set with a 6-1 lead after switching sides of the court until their offense stalled at 14 points. The Bronco defense, in combination with its offense, would even the set count at 1-1 with a 25-14 win.

Both teams battled back and forth in the third set with six score ties before Fayetteville State secured an 18-16 advantage. Mount Olive would pull within one, 23-22, but a setting error and a kill by the Broncos would give FSU a 2-1 set advantage and a 25-22 win.

Fayetteville State struggled early in the fourth set with errors that would give way to a Trojan 19-10 lead. The Broncos seemed to recover from its mistakes, trailing by two points until a kill by UMO would stop the set at 25-22 in favor of the Trojans.

The final elimination round would see FSU go up 8-5 and then trail 10-8 to UMO. Errors would again plague the Broncos as Mount Olive pulled away with a 15-11 decision.

Redshirt sophomore Nia Bell (Elizabeth City, NC) led the way for the Broncos with 12 kills on 37 attacks. Arlicia Ortiz (Senior - Spanaway, WA) would assist the effort with 11 kills of her on from 38 attacks. Nakia McKinnie (sophomore - Niceville, FL) chipped in 21 assists while Jessica Ware (freshman -- Fayetteville, NC) had 23 digs.



Fayetteville State would commit a total of 45 errors in the match. The Broncos had 27 attack errors, ten (10) reception errors and four (4) service errors. FSU also finished with two (2) blocking and ball handling errors.

The Broncos will face Valdosta State University in their second match of the invitational.
