Broncos Sweep Benedict 3-0 in Road Season-Opener

Columbia, SC -- Fayetteville State traveled to Columbia, SC for its volleyball season-opener and swept the Tigers of Benedict College 3-0. The Broncos (1-0 overall) cruised to a two-set advantage, 25-10 and 25-12, until Benedict found inspiration from its football team; who entered the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena following practice.


Benedict (0-1 overall) jumped to an early 4-2 lead in the third set and overcame a FSU run to tie the period at 10-10. The Tigers continued their surge for a 22-15 lead, but their efforts stalled two points shy of sending the match to a fourth set at 23-18. Fayetteville State notched the score at 23 and left it in the hands of Senior outside hitter Arlicia Ortiz (Spanaway, WA), who scored kills for the final two FSU points and a 25-23 victory.


The final set saw eight (8) game ties and four lead changes. Ortiz finished with a game-high 10 kills from 19 total attacks (.474 hitting percentage) and 11 digs. Bridgette Nathan (Sophomore -- Charlotte, NC) had six (6) kills from 21 attack attempts. Avery Shaw (Junior -- Gig Harbor, WA) and Nakia McKinnie (Sophomore -- Niceville, FL) finished with 18 and 12 set assists, respectfully.




Kiarra Pettway did it all for the Benedict Tigers with ten kills from 26 attacks, 25 set assists and 44 digs. Of the 98 total attacks for the team, the Tigers committed 26 errors with its 26 kills for a .000 hitting percentage.


Fayetteville State will travel to Aiken, SC to participate in the USC Aiken Volleyball Tournament. The Broncos will face Mount Olive and Valdosta State on September 8th and will take on Augusta and Barton on September 9th.
