HAMPTON, VA - Fayetteville State's Tiffany Haywood and Kristy Mitchell were two of 20 student-athletes named to the Central Interocllegiate Athletic Association's (CIAA) 13th annual CIAA Comissioner's All-Academic Team, the conference announced on Friday. Both Haywood (Fayetteville, NC) and Mitchell (Fayetteville, NC) were selected to the second team. Haywood, a member of the women's basketball team, was named FSU’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year after helping to lead the Broncos to their third conference title. She maintained a 3.361 overall grade point average (GPA) in Elementary Education. Mitchell, who had six total wins for the FSU women's tennis team, has a near perfect 3.98 GPA while majoring in math. She was honored with the Broncos' Female Meritorious Award for scholarship, community service, and success on the field or court. "I’m proud of each one of our student-athletes and their commitment and dedication to education," said Leon G. Kerry, the CIAA's commissioner. "In these tough economic times, having the ability to multi-task and treat both their academic and athletic endeavors with devotion will set them ahead of the game of life." The CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team aims to recognize 20 well-deserving student-athletes for their efforts in the classroom, in the community, as well as their contributions to the success of their respective athletic programs. Ten CIAA student-athletes were named first-team CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. Those 10 student-athletes boasted a 3.95 overall GPA. The second team also consists of 10 student-athletes, averaging a 3.69 overall GPA. Both Shaw and Johnson C. Smith University's placed three student-athletes on the first team.
