RALEIGH, NC - The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos' tennis team picked up two more victories over the weekend to take a .500 record in CIAA play heading into the Spring Championships.
The Broncos' top-seeded player, Varice Love (Fr., Fayetteville, NC), won three singles matches and partnered with No. 2 seed Brittney Williams (Fr., Greensboro, NC) to win three doubles matches as the Broncos took 5-0 decisions against Livingstone and St. Augustine's over the weekend to improve to 8-13 overall and 7-7 in league play.
Fayetteville State, by finishing among the top four teams in the Southern Division, has qualified to play in next week's CIAA Tournament in Petersburg, VA.
The Lady Broncos made quick work of both St. Augustine's and Livingstone, and didn't need to complete the matches after having already closed their opponents out. Fayetteville State also got doubles wins from the duos of Chioma Okwara (Jr., Charlotte, NC) and Tiane Ellis (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) and Danielle Boone (So., Hallsboro, NC) and Jo'Nel Barnes (So., Baltimore, MD) in both victories.
Okwara was also credited with singles victories in each match as well.
The Lady Broncos fell in three matches over the weekend, losing 6-3 to Johnson C. Smith and Shaw. Winston-Salem State prevailed 9-0 over Fayetteville State.
Love and Williams each scored a singles victory and teamed up to win a doubles match for the Broncos' three wins against Johnson C. Smith.
Against Shaw, Okwara and Barnes each won a singles match while Boone and Barnes teamed together for a doubles victory.
