MURFREESBORO, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s tennis team dropped both matches on Saturday afternoon on day one of the CIAA Northern Round-Up hosted by Chowan. The Lady Broncos fell to Elizabeth City State and Virginia State as both matches were first to five. FSU falls to 0-8 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.
Fayetteville State began the day by suffering a 5-0 loss to Elizabeth City State. The Lady Broncos dropped both doubles matches but fought hard in both. In the No. 1 doubles contest, Samantha Ledbetter and Taylor Norris fell 8-6 to Valerie Edwards and Samantha Craig. Joylene Thompson and Octavia Wynn fell in their No. 2 doubles match to Michelle Thomas and Tyra Spell 8-5.
In singles competition, FSU lost three matches with two others unfinished. Norris fell to Edwards at No. 2 singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-1; while Wynn, playing at No. 3 singles, lost in straight sets to Thomas 6-1, 6-3. Laura Worriax suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat to Christen Pelton in the No. 5 singles match.
The Lady Broncos ended the day with a 4-0 defeat to Virginia State in a contest originally scheduled for Mar. 15 but had to be adjusted due to darkness. All three doubles matches went unfinished as FSU dropped four singles contests. Ledbetter fell to Amanda Spencer in her No. 1 singles match 8-1; and Norris lost to Zaire Simmons 8-0 playing at No. 2 singles. Wynn, in the No. 3 singles contest, suffered an 8-0 defeat to Nakesha Harry. In the final singles match, Worriax fell to Kayla Kale 8-0.
Fayetteville State will return to the courts on Sunday, Mar. 17 as it faces Chowan at 10 a.m. on the final day of the CIAA Northern Round-Up. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
