FAYETTEVILLE STATE WOMEN’S TENNIS SUFFERS SETBACKS AT THE CIAA ROUNDUP

Elizabeth City, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s tennis team fell to Virginia Union University (5-0) and Elizabeth City State University (5-4) during the CIAA Roundup hosted by Elizabeth City State on March 10-11 at the ECSU Tennis Complex. FSU moves to 1-2 overall and in conference.

On day one, the Lady Broncos clashed with VUU until weather interrupted play. Senior Selena Cox (Wilmington, NC) and sophomore Staisha Cain (Wilson, NC) were barely edged (9-8) by Sabrina Connor and Logan Reid in number one doubles. Zsakee Crocker and Amirah Eckles defeated sophomore Destiney Jordan (Manhattan, NY) and freshman Brittany Doss (Angier, NC) 8-3 in the second doubles flight.

Junior Asia Potts (Rock Hill, SC) and freshman Tajah Clark (Clayton, NC) were held scoreless in an 8-0 loss to Destiny Chapman and Lynda Kaneza in the third and final doubles match. Chapman and Kaneza also won the fifth and sixth singles sets to account for the 5-0 win for the Lady Panthers.

The first four singles matches went unfinished due to inclement weather.

In the second match on day two against the Lady Vikings, Cox and Cain topped Jocelyn Lewis and Tatiana Cuffie 8-1 in the number one double spot. ECSU recovered with victories in the second and third doubles matches. Fayetteville State faced a 2-1 deficit entering singles competition.

Cain won the first singles flight (6-1, 6-0), followed by a win in the second singles spot by Cox (6-0, 6-2). Briana Henderson and Rodnika Jones won the fourth and sixth singles positions, respectively for ECSU. Clark tied the match 3-3 with a victory in the fifth singles flight (6-4, 6-0) over Danielle Hill.

 

 

Jordan won the first set 6-4 in the number three singles match. Cuffie won the second set 6-2 and the tiebreaker 12-10 for a match win.

FSU will face division rival Winston-Salem State University for a home opening match on Tuesday, March 14th. Play match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Capel Tennis Complex on the campus of Fayetteville State.
