PETERSBURG, Va. - Varice Love isn't just the top player on the Fayetteville State Broncos' tennis team.

She's one of the best players in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Love (So., Fayetteville, N.C.) was 3-0 in singles matches over the weekend as the Lady Broncos finished 2-1 at the first session of the CIAA Roundup, defeating Bowie State 6-3 and Lincoln (PA) 6-3.

Love, teaming with second-seeded singles player Brittney Williams, was also 2-1 in doubles play as the Lady Broncos (2-4, 2-1) established themselves as a strong contender from the Southern Division for the CIAA Tennis Championship Tournament in April.

And a big reason is because Love, the CIAA Rookie of the Year last season, has help. Williams (So. Greensboro, N.C.) also stood out in roundup play, finishing 2-1 in singles action. Samantha Ledbetter (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.), Fayetteville State's third-seeded player, was also 2-1 in singles play, and teamed with M'Waka Thomas (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) to finish 2-1 in doubles.

Against Bowie State and Lincoln, Love, Ledbetter and Williams were hardly tested, losing a combined four games in six sets between them. Love had a spirited match with Virginia State's top-seeded player, Amanda Spencer before prevailing 7-5, 7-5. The Lady Trojans won the match 8-1.

The Lady Broncos will complete the cross-divisional roundup this weekend, playing Chowan, Elizabeth City State and Virginia Union in Murfreesboro, N.C. Fayetteville State hosts UNC Pembroke at 1 p.m. on March 21.
