Fayetteville, NC - The Wingate University women's tennis team swept the three doubles matches on the way to an 8-1 NCAA Division II victory over host Fayetteville State University Thursday afternoon at the Capel Arena tennis courts. Wingate improves to 2-2 overall while the Lady Broncos fall to 0-3.

Bulldog junior Pierce Dillard (Simpsonville, S.C.) was one of five Wingate student-athletes to win twice Thursday. At number one doubles, Dillard teamed with classmate Hollyn Alberghini (Stanfield, N.C.) to defeat Fayetteville State's Ines Nieves and Kristen Tapassi 8-4.

In singles action, Dillard defeated Tapassi 6-3, 6-1 at the number two spot. Alberghini topped reigning CIAA volleyball Player of the Year Chekimbrell Jefferson 6-0, 6-1 at the number four singles position. Wingate lost only two total games at the number four, five and six singles flights.

Wingate freshman Ewa Opala (Redziny, Poland) won her first matches as a Bulldog, picking up a doubles victory and a singles victory. In individual competition, Opala topped FSU's Amber Mitchell 6-1, 6-0 in number six singles. Earlier in the day, Opala paired with sophomore Zoe Hartas (Sydney, Australia) to blank Mitchell and Lindsey Dean 8-0 in the number three doubles match.

Ines Nieves earned Fayetteville State's only victory Thursday. The 2008 CIAA women's tennis Player of the Year, Nieves survived a battle with Wingate sophomore and All-SAC performer Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) 6-2, 3-6, 10-1. A junior for the FSU Broncos, Nieves prevailed 10-1 in the super tie-breaker substituted for the third set.
