RALEIGH, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s tennis team opened its 2013 season on Friday with two losses to the Lincoln (PA) Lions and Virginia Union Panthers on day one of a CIAA Southern Round-up hosted by Saint Augustine’s University. The Lady Broncos (0-2) fell in their opener to Lincoln (PA) 5-4 and followed with a 9-0 setback in the nightcap against Virginia Union.


FSU won three singles matches against the Lions but fell in doubles competition losing two. Lincoln captured the doubles point by winning two out of the three matches. The number one doubles tandem of Samantha Ledbetter and Taylor Norris won the only doubles match, 8-3, over Shari Davis and Haley Hendricks.

The duo carried their momentum into singles play by winning both of their matches. Ledbetter was victorious in straight sets over Davis in the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0; while Norris defeated Sharmain Henderson 6-0, 6-1. Octavia Tann, playing No. 5 singles, defeated Monie Fisher 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Broncos were unable to capture a point in their second contest of the day against Virginia Union.

Fayetteville State will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16 when it faces the Bowie State Bulldogs at 10 a.m. on day two of the CIAA Southern Round-up.
