FSU Broncos Open the 2018 Season with a 9-0 Loss to Salem International

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State women’s tennis team has its first match of the 2018 season under its belt. The Broncos were defeated 9-0 by Salem International (1-3 overall) Tuesday afternoon on the Capel Arena Courts in frigid weather.

The skies were overcast and hand-warmers were a welcome accessory as the temperature hung around the mid-to-low 50’s.

The match opened with doubles-play. The Tigers duo of Kristina Vuksanovic and Anna Kovalova defeated the Broncos No. 1 twosome of Staisha Cain and Kayla Williams 8-0. FSU’s Amber Gladden and Brittany Doss lost 8-1 to Waverly Federico and Megan Perez in the No. 2 Doubles.

The competition to watch was in the third doubles set, between freshmen Charli Daniels/Deanna Butler and Salem International’s Jennifer Perez/Brianna Vasquez. This match went the distance with the Tigers winning 8-5.

In singles matches, Staisha Cain (Fayetteville, NC) was defeated at No. 1 by Vuksanovic, 8-4. Kayla Doss (Angier, NC) had an exciting match of her own losing 8-5 to Waverly Federico at No. 3. Deanna Butler (Fayetteville, NC) had an 8-3 loss at No. 5. Charli Daniels (Fayetteville, NC) and Amber Gladden (Danville, VA) was both defeated 8-1 at the No.4 and No. 6 matches, respectively. At the No. 2 Singles, Kayla Williams (Fayetteville, NC) was defeated 8-0.



The Broncos (0-1 overall) will regroup to play its in-town rival Methodist on Saturday, February 24th. The match will begin at 2 p.m. on the Monarch Courts.
