FAYETTEVILLE STATE SOFTBALL RECEIVES FIVE 2017 ALL-CIAA SEASON HONORS

Charlotte, NC – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in conjunction with the CIAA Softball Coaches Association has announced the 2017 All-Conference Teams (First and Second), All-Rookie Team, and Players of the Year. Fayetteville State University had five selections to include junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) as a First Team selection; junior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC), junior leftfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC), and junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) were elected to the Second Team, while freshman first baseman Rachel Rodriguez (Fayetteville, NC) picked up All-Rookie Team honors.

LADY BRONCOS SOFTBALL FINISHES 1-1 AFTER DAY ONE OF THE CIAA ROUNDUP
The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team lost to Bowie State University (1-0) then defeated Virginia Union University (10-2) in the opening day of the CIAA Roundup hosted by Johnson C. Smith University at Nevins Community Park. FSU moves to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA.

Goins has played in 31 games this season and tabbed 36 hits, 24 runs scored, and 18 RBIs. She has a .364 batting average, .393 on-base percentage, and a .525 slugging percentage. Goins has two triples, nine doubles, and a homerun. This is her third consecutive season on the All-CIAA First Team; she also received All-Rookie Team honors as a freshman.

Knowles has appeared in all 36 games this season. She has produced 37 hits, 28 RBIs, and 27 runs scored. Knowles has been solid defensively with a team-high 228 putouts. She six doubles, two triples and four homeruns. Knowles has a .567 slugging percentage, .438 on-base percentage, and .356 batting average. This is the second consecutive season Knowles has been selected for All-CIAA Second Team honors.


 

 

Smith has also appeared in all 36 games this season for the Lady Broncos. She has team-highs of 42 hits, 39 RBIs (1st in CIAA), and seven homeruns. Smith has a .649 slugging percentage, a .382 on-base percentage, and a .368 batting average. This is the first all-conference selection for Smith.

Green stood out again this year at pitcher for FSU. She has a record of 10-4 on the mound this season; tied for third in the CIAA for wins (10) and earned run average (2.52). Green has a team-high 68 strikeouts with 23 walks. She has played in 34 games this season with 27 hits, 18 RBIs, and 28 runs scored. This is the second All-CIAA (Second) Team honor of her career; she also received All-Rookie Team honors as a freshman.

Rodriguez played in eight games as a freshman at Fayetteville State. She produced seven RBIs, five runs scored, and six hits; which include two doubles, two triples, and a homerun. Rodriguez had 14 putouts at first base. Her averages this season were .733 (on-base), .600 (batting), and 1.500 (slugging).

The Lady Broncos (21-15 overall, 14-2 CIAA, 9-1 division) will enter the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships as the Southern Division champs and the Southern No. 1 seed for a second straight time. Fayetteville State will play the North's No. 4 Virginia Union (5-5 Division; 7-9 CIAA; 10-15 Overall) on Thursday, May 4th at the Petersburg Sports Complex in Petersburg, VA. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
