April 23, 2007 Ettrick, VA - Bowie State University, the top seed in the Eastern Division, had a tough time with the Lady Broncos softball team but managed to edge Fayetteville State University 5-2 in the opening round of the CIAA Sports Softball Championship. The Lady Broncos, fourth seed in the Western Division, scored one run in the top of the first inning on Shatia Gidrey's single to left field, scoring Ariel McNair who reached base on an error. The Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University scored twice in the second inning but Fayetteville State answered with a run in the fourth, making the score 3-2 in favor of Bowie State. The Lady Bulldogs took command in the bottom of the fourth, scoring an insurance run and adding an additional run in the sixth for the 5-2 win. FSU's Gidrey, McNair and Donieca Ebron accounted for FSU's three hit. The loss dropped FSU to the loser bracket against Saint Augustine's College. Despite hitting into three double plays and giving up three runs in the fifth and seventh innings, the Lady Broncos managed to hang on and defeat the Lady Falcons from Saint Augustine's College 9-8 to stay alive in the CIAA Softball Tournament. The Lady Broncos improved to 9-27, and will face Elizabeth City State University, losers to Bowie State University Friday, April 20 with hopes of advancing to the winner round of the tournament. The Lady Broncos took and early 5-0 lead on six hits and four errors, increased the lead to six before SAC could get on the scoreboard in the second inning with two runs on two hits and two FSU's errors. The Lady Broncos increased the lead on two unearned runs by Aja Sawyer and DeOndra Peterson. SAC mounted a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Diana Andrews' triple scored Antoinette Bailey, Terea Albury and Kyuanna Foxx. Andrews was out at home trying to stretch her hit. The inning ended with FSU leading 8-5. The Lady Broncos scored the winning run in the top of the seventh. Donieca Ebron singled down the left field line. Sade Morris bunt sent Ebron to second and followed going to third on a pass ball. Tiauna Clemmons struck out. The game winning RBI came on Dominique Mills singled to right field. Mills was picked-off at first ending the inning. SAC again mounted a three run rally in their half of the inning before Sade Morris caused SAC's batter to ground out, giving the Lady Broncos the right to advance and play another day.
