FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Fayetteville State has two teams traveling up to Petersburg, VA this week for the 2013 CIAA Championships hosted by Virginia State University. The men's golf and softball teams have each qualified for the championship in their respective sport. The 2013 CIAA Championships are slated to begin on Thursday, Apr. 18.

The festivities begin on Wednesday, Apr. 17 with the Baseball, Golf, Softball and Tennis Awards Banquet that will last from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the Gateway Dining & Event Center on the Virginia State campus.

The men's golf tournament will be held at the Cardinal Golf Club in Camp Lee, VA. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning with the practice rounds; and officially kicks off on Thursday  with the first round. The second, and final, round will be held on Friday, Apr. 19. Both rounds will tee off at 9 a.m. each day.

The Bronco men's golf program enters the two-day event as one of the favorites after winning the Southern Division crown. Fayetteville State finished in first place of the CIAA Southern Division Tournament in Clayton, NC on Mar. 11-12. Virginia State, who won the CIAA Northern Division Tournament on Mar. 18 in Chesterfield, VA, garnered the top position from the Northern Division. FSU opened the 2012-13 season with five straight top 10 finishes.

Jacob Barge (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) is making the most out of his final season with Fayetteville State as he has four top 10 finishes; highlighted by winning Individual Medalist honors at the CIAA Southern Division Tournament. The victory was the second of three straight top 10 finishes. Barge leads the Broncos with a stroke average of 76 and is followed by Brandon Jobe (So., Fayetteville, NC) at 77.93.

The softball tournament begins at 12 p.m. on Thursday afternoon with a total of eight games scheduled to be played. The second day consists of five more games starting at 10 a.m. The championships game is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 20.

The Lady Bronco softball team enters the week as the Southern Division's third seed after finishing the regular season with a 6-4 divisional record. FSU completed the regular season with a 10-6 conference record; giving it three straight seasons of ten or more wins in CIAA competition.

Winston-Salem State and Chowan enter the tournament as the two top teams overall. Chowan won the Northern Division with a perfect 10-0 division record and 15-1 mark in the conference; while Winston-Salem State captured the Southern Division after going 9-1 against divisional opponents and 15-1 in conference play.

Two-way player Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) leads FSU both offensively and on the mound. Embler is hitting .379 on the season with a team-high 28 RBI. She is also tied for the team-lead in wins with six and has recorded three shutouts. Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC), Jessica Randolph (Jr., Pinetops, NC) and Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) are also hitting over .300 this season at the plate. Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) is tied with Embler in wins and has pitched 17 complete games.
