HAMPTON, VA – Fayetteville State softball players Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) have been recognized by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association for their performances on the diamond last week. Washington was named the CIAA Offensive Player of the Week while Henderson-Holmes garnered CIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third straight week.

Washington, who has played every game this season at shortstop, led FSU offensively last week with a .800 average in two games played. She had a team-high four hits in five plate appearances and tied for the team-lead in runs scored with three. Washington recorded one double, five total bases and three walks; and posted a perfect 1.000 slugging percentage and .889 on-base percentage. She went 2-for-2 with one RBI during a 6-5 victory in game one of a doubleheader with Saint Augustine's. Washington followed with two more hits in three plate appearances in game two.

She currently ranks second on the team in hitting with a .342 average and is third with 19 RBI. Washington is one of four players, along with Henderson-Holmes, to start in all 40 games this season. She leads the team with 11 doubles and is tied for first with 55 total bases. Washington is also tied for the team-lead with two triples and is 7-for-12 in stolen bases.

Sierra Henderson-Holmes (14)

Henderson-Holmes recorded 15 putouts last week from her catcher position while tying for the team-lead in assists with three to lead the Lady Bronco defense. She began the weekend with six putouts and one assist in game one against Saint Augustine’s; and followed with nine putouts and two assists in the second game. Offensively, Henderson-Holmes hit .250 while displaying excellent plate discipline by drawing four walks.

She ranks first on the team in putouts with 162 and is fourth in assists at 29. Henderson-Holmes is third on the team in runs scored (21) and hits (34); and fifth in hitting with a .293 average. She has driven in 16 runs this season.

Fayetteville State returns to action on Thursday, Apr. 18 when it travels to Petersburg, VA for the first day of the 2013 CIAA Championship. The championship will be held at the Petersburg Sports Complex and lasts until Saturday, Apr. 20 with the title game.
