FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State softball team hits the road for the final time this season on Saturday afternoon as it takes on the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams in a pivotal CIAA Southern Division matchup. The twin billing features the top two teams in the division as both come in sporting 4-0 records. FSU will also look to improve on its seven-game conference winning streak.

Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State enter the weekend showdown tied for first place, along with Saint Augustine’s, in the division. The Lady Rams own a 9-0 record in conference play while the Lady Broncos are 8-2 along with Saint Augustine’s. FSU’s 8-2 conference record is tied for third-best in the CIAA.

The Lady Broncos are coming off two losses on Thursday in non-conference play to Salem International in Fayetteville. FSU fell to Salem International by scores of 8-3 and 7-4. Winston-Salem State swept Brevard in back-to-back extra inning games on the road Friday. The Lady Rams won game one 1-0 in nine innings and game two 8-6 in eight innings.

Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC) leads Fayetteville State offensively with a .411 average and 24 RBI in 34 games played. Embler also tops the FSU pitching staff with a 4.10 ERA and is tied for the team-lead at five wins. Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) and Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) are also hitting over .300 for the Lady Broncos. Kristen Bell (Fr., Hubert, NC) also has five wins on the mound to go with 14 complete games.

Winston-Salem State is led on offense by Tanaya Pettus with a .396 average and 21 RBI. Pettus is one of seven WSSU players that are hitting over .300 on the season. Latoya Lynch has a team-high two home runs. Brittany Lane leads the Lady Rams pitching staff with a 9-7 record and 2.11 ERA; while Monet Daly posts a 2.92 earned run average.

Fayetteville State wraps up its 2013 regular season next weekend with four games against Shaw and Saint Augustine’s at home. FSU faces Shaw on Saturday, Apr. 6 and Saint Augustine’s on Sunday, Apr. 7.

While Caldwell (Fr., Newport, N.C.) struck out a career-high 14 and allowed just two hits, Lane nearly pitched a no-hitter in a 1-hit shutout of the Lady Broncos in a 2-0 win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Leonard R. Saunders Field.
