FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Fayetteville State softball team will stay in conference play on Tuesday afternoon as it hosts the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls in a doubleheader at Seabrook Park. Game one of the twin billing is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. followed by game two at 4 p.m. The doubleheader will be the first of four games this week for the Lady Broncos against CIAA opponents; FSU travels to Winston-Salem State for two games on Saturday.

The Lady Broncos are playing their best softball of the season over the last seven games. Fayetteville State is 6-1 during that span including five straight wins against conference opponents. FSU went 3-0 in the CIAA Round-Up it hosted last week with wins over Bowie State, Virginia Union and Lincoln (PA). The Lady Broncos then added a non-conference win over Shaw before falling to Bloomsburg. Fayetteville State then swept Livingstone in a doubleheader this past weekend in Salisbury.

FSU enters the midweek contest tied for second in the CIAA Southern Division standings with Saint Augustine’s and is two games back of leader Winston-Salem State. The Lady Broncos are currently 6-2 in the conference and 2-0 in division play. Johnson C. Smith ranks fifth in the Southern Division with a 2-5 league mark and is 0-4 against division opponents.

The reigning CIAA Pitcher of the Week leads the team with a .393 average at the plate and is tied for first with four victories on the mound. Embler leads the FSU offense in hits (33), doubles (8), RBI (20) and total bases (44). She has won her last four starts on the mound and is 4-6 overall with a 4.03 ERA.

Sencerae Locklear (So., Fairmont, NC) and Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) are also hitting over .300 this season for the Lady Broncos. Locklear has a .347 average and leads the team with two home runs. Washington posts a .337 average and is tied with Embler at eight doubles. Daniqua Taylor (Jr., Currie, NC) is a perfect 11-for-11 in the stolen base category. Kristen Bell (Jr., Hubert, NC) also has four wins on the mound and has 12 complete games to her credit.

Ashton Byrd leads the Johnson C. Smith offense with a .400 average and 18 hits in 16 games played. Byrd is one of six players who are hitting over .300 this season for the Lady Golden Bulls. Britney Warren has a team-high 11 RBI; while Cabrisha Anderson, Stacy Peralta and Melissa Vierra have each hit one home run this season. Vierra leads the JCSU pitching staff with four wins, one save and ten complete games.

Fayetteville State will remain at home on Thursday afternoon when it hosts the Salem International Tigers in a doubleheader at Seabrook Park. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m. with game two scheduled for 5 p.m.
