Charlotte, NC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has named junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC), senior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) and senior designated hitter HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) to the 2017 Preseason All-CIAA Team and predicted Fayetteville State University to finish fourth overall and second in the Southern Division. The preseason all-conference team and predicted order of finish are selected by the CIAA Softball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors.

Goins has been named to the Preseason All-CIAA Team for the second consecutive season. She played in 35 of 37 games during the 2016 season. Goins recorded 34 hits, 17 runs scored, and 12 RBIs. She had a .321 batting average, .357 on-base percentage, and a .368 slugging percentage. Goins had two triples and a double. She is a two-time All-CIAA First Team selection and earned All-Rookie Team honors her freshman year.

Howard played in 34 of 37 games last season. She accumulated 31 hits, 24 runs scored, and 13 RBIs. Howard had an on-base percentage of .417, a slugging percentage of .370, and a .337 batting average. She earned All-CIAA First Team honors at the conclusion of the 2016 season.

Knowles appeared in 36 of 37 contests during the 2016 season. She produced 35 hits, 32 RBIs, and 20 runs scored. Knowles hit a team-high 12 doubles, along with two homeruns and a triple. She had a .514 slugging percentage, .421 on-base percentage, and .327 batting average. Knowles also received 2016 All-CIAA First Team credit.

Fayetteville State has been picked to finish second in the Southern Division and fourth in the overall CIAA. The Lady Broncos concluded the 2016 season with a record of 22-19 overall, 13-3 in the CIAA, and 9-1 in the division. FSU won the Southern Division last season, despite being picked third in the division and fourth overall during the preseason.



Chowan has been picked as the top team out of the Northern Division and for the overall conference. The Hawks finished as tournament runners-up after being eliminated by Winston-Salem State in the championships. Winston-Salem has been predicted to finish second overall and atop of the Southern Division as defending CIAA Champions.

Conference play begins this weekend at the CIAA Round-Up, hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. Games will be held Friday, March 17 – Sunday, March 19 at Nevins Community Park. The event is free and open to the public. The 2017 CIAA Softball Championship will be held May 4-6 on the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.
