The Fayetteville State softball team hits the road for the first time in 2013 this weekend by making the short trip to Pembroke, NC to take part in the UNCP Invitational at LRA Field. The Lady Broncos will play four games during the tournament which takes place Feb. 9-10. FSU dropped a season-opening doubleheader at home to Concord on Feb. 3.


The Lady Broncos will play two games each on Saturday and Sunday. Fayetteville State takes on the Kutztown Golden Bears at 10 a.m. and California (PA) Vulcans at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday; and the Concord Mountain Lions at 1:30 p.m. and Francis Marion Patriots at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

FSU fell to Concord by scores of 8-4 and 4-3 its season opener at Seabrook Park. Haley Wood (Fr., Spring Hope, NC) led Fayetteville State with three hits and three RBI in the two contests. She currently leads the team in hitting with a .429 average. Spencer Embler (Jr., Thomasville, NC), Ashley Wlezen (Sr., Charlotte, NC), Maya Washington (Jr., Red Springs, NC) and Sierra Henderson-Holmes (So., Olivia, NC) each have one RBI on the season. Embler is also the team’s top pitcher sporting a 3.00 ERA.

Kutztown will be commencing its 2013 season this weekend. The Golden Bears are ranked third in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Preseason Top 25 after advancing to the national semi-finals last season. Kutztown finished last season 52-7 overall and 19-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

California (PA) also opens its season this weekend in Pembroke. The Vulcans participate in the same conference as Kutztown and is projected to finish second in the Western Division of the league’s preseason poll. California (PA) finished last season with a 33-10 overall record and 12-2 mark in the conference. The Vulcans captured the PSAC West title for the fourth straight season and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.

Concord currently holds a 2-2 record on the season. The Mountain Lions opened the year sweeping Fayetteville State and followed by dropping two games at St. Andrews. Jessica Seymour leads the Concord offense with a .500 average while Alyssa Morris has hit a team-high two home runs. Rachael Mack and Lacey McDougall each have one win on the mound while Mack boasts a 2.92 ERA.

Francis Marion is 5-1 overall to start the season and began with five straight victories over Wheeling Jesuit, Barton, Mount Olive and Newberry. The Patriots are led on offense by Carly Madigan with a .389 average while Tristan Faile has driven in a team-leading seven RBI.

The Lady Broncos will return to action next weekend (Feb. 15-17) when it travels to Raleigh, NC to participate in both the Shaw Softball Challenge and CIAA Roundup. FSU has a total of six games slated for the weekend.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville State softball team opened its 2013 season on Sunday afternoon by dropping a doubleheader against the Concord Mountain Lions (2-0 overall) at Seabrook Park. The Lady Broncos lost by scores of 8-4 and 4-3. Haley Wood (Fr., Spring Hope, NC) recorded three hits and drove in three runs in her first games for Fayetteville State.
