LADY BRONCOS SOFTBALL ELIMINATED FROM 2017 CIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS AFTER 7-2 LOSS TO BOWIE STATE

Petersburg, VA – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team fell 7-2 to Bowie State University on final day (May 6) of the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships held at the Virginia State University Softball Field. FSU concludes the season 23-17 overall, 14-2 in the CIAA, and 9-1 as regular season Southern Division champions.

The first three innings of the contest had some hitting, but no runs scored by either team. In the top of the fourth, BSU exploded with seven runs off six hits and one error. Fayetteville State trailed 7-0 until the bottom of the fifth.

All-CIAA junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) followed a double by senior utility Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) with a double of her own. Green recorded a RBI by bringing in Howard with the hit to right center. All-CIAA junior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) had a single in the inning that would score Green. FSU scored two runs off three hits in the fifth.

No additional runs were scored in the sixth and seventh innings. Bowie State held onto the 7-2 victory to advance into the championship game against Chowan University. The Hawks defeated BSU 6-1 to claim the 2017 CIAA Softball Championship.

Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) and Howard split time on the pitching mound. Walker pitched 3.1 innings with six hits and six runs allowed with four walks. Howard pitched the reminder of the game with four hits and one run allowed with one walk. Both had two strikeouts apiece.

Freshman utility Courtney Pierre (Vanceboro, NC) had two hits, both doubles. Knowles produced two hits and nine putouts. The pitching duo of Carley Green and Kyrin Walker were selected to the CIAA All-Tournament Team.

 

 

The Lady Broncos softball program has won the regular season division title the last two seasons and advanced one game further in the conference tournament the last three seasons under head coach Jackie Stickley. FSU will have three seniors progress away from the program with 10 potential returning letter winners, including All-CIAA selections Shi-Cara Goins, Maggie Smith, Green and Knowles.
