Petersburg, VA – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team defeated Virginia Union University (13-4) and Johnson C. Smith University (6-4) on the opening day of the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships held on Thursday, May 4th at the Petersburg Sports Complex. FSU improves to 23-15 overall and will face Chowan University (No. 1 North) on Friday, May 5th.

Fayetteville State dominated the first game of the afternoon against VUU. The Lady Broncos produced four runs in the first and third innings for an 8-0 lead going into the fifth. Freshman utility Courtney Pierre (Vanceboro, NC) belted a 3-RBI homerun to left field in the first. FSU had five hits and four runs in the third, including doubles from All-CIAA junior leftfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) and Pierre.

After four scoreless innings, Virginia Union came alive with five hits and four runs in the top of the fifth. Breana Miller had a 3-RBI homerun to right centerfield. The Lady Broncos answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior third baseman Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) homered to left field to bring in three runs.

FSU won the game 13-4 in five innings due to the NCAA eight run rule. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) earned the win on the mound with five strikeouts, six hits, and four runs allowed. Pierre had a great game with three hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Adams capped the contest with two hits, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

In the second game, the Lady Broncos maintained a lead despite not scoring after the third inning. All-CIAA junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) smacked a solo homerun to left field in the first inning. Goins had the only hit and run in the inning. FSU added a run in the second for a 2-0 advantage in the contest.



JCSU manufactured five hits and two runs in the top of the third to tie the game 2-2. Fayetteville State took advantage of infield errors by the Golden Bulls in the bottom of the third. Johnson C. Smith allowed four runs off two hits in the third. FSU held a 6-2 lead at the end of three innings.

The Golden Bulls scored one run in the fifth and seventh innings. However, the Lady Broncos closed out the game and advanced in the tournament. All-CIAA junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) recorded her 11th win of the year. She allowed 12 hits and four runs with three strikeouts.

FSU is scheduled to face Chowan University on Friday, May 5th at the Virginia State Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.; however there is inclement weather in the forecast. The Lady Broncos defeated the Hawks (1-0) during the CIAA Roundup earlier in the season (March 8). These are the last two undefeated teams in the tournament.
