Fayetteville State Headed to the Ship with 11-10 Extra-Inning Win over WSSU

Salem, Va. – Fayetteville State was facing a tough task, this morning, of needing three games to make it to the CIAA Softball Championship Game in Moyer Park, Salem, Va. What was unforeseeable was that the Broncos would also need extra innings in addition to the wins. Shi-Cara Goins ripped a ball deep into left centerfield to send FSU to the “Ship” after defeating Winston-Sale State 11-10 with two tie-breaker innings.

Fayetteville State (15-24 overall) defeated the CIAA Southern Division Champion Saint Augustine’s 12-6 in the first round of the Elimination Bracket. FSU hit its way to a 10-1 lead after four innings. The Falcons (17-10 overall) committed 10 errors as the Broncos collected 11 hits.

In its second game of the day, Fayetteville State dismantled Shaw (12-20 overall), 16-3. FSU had an explosive third inning with eight runs for a 15-3 lead.

The battle of the tournament was the final game of the day. The Southern Division rivalry rematch was set after Winston-Salem State loss a 7-1 match-up with the North’s No. 1 Chowan.

WSSU (13-26 overall), who enjoyed a longer intermission between games than Fayetteville State, jumped to an early 5-0 lead after the first inning and extended it to 7-3 after three innings.

Fayetteville State put on its rally cap in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs. Rachel Rodriguez started the run when she scored on WSSU’s new pitcher’s wild pitch. Shi-Cara Goins singled to center field for the second run. A fielding error and a double by Madison Mendoza tied the game at 7-7. Courtney Pierre’s single gave the Broncos an 8-7 lead to close out the fourth inning.



In the top of the seventh inning, WSSU tied the game at 8-8 and set the game up for the International Tiebreaker Rule with a throw-down third out before the Broncos could score a winning run.

With a runner placed on second base in the eighth inning, Nyla Howard scored on a throwing error to 3rd baseman for a one-run lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, HaLee Knowles was placed on second and later advanced home after a sacrifice bunt and a Courtney Pierre single.

With the score tied at 9-9 and still in the tiebreaker scenario, WSSU’s Tia Robinson singled through the left side for an RBI and a 10-9 lead.

With a chance to finally end a long day, FSU landed two runners on base when Brittney Lee put down a bunt that escaped the pitcher and the 2nd baseman. The extended game came to an exuberating end when Shi-Cara Goins ripped a double deep to left center for a two-run RBI and a punched ticket to the CIAA Championship game.

Fayetteville State will face the Chowan Hawks on Wednesday, May 2nd at 1:00 pm in Moyer Park for the conference championship title. The event will be free and open to the public with live statistics available at www.theciaa.com.
