Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team defeated Saint Augustine’s University (5-3, 11-6) in both games of the season finale divisional doubleheader on Sunday, April 30th at Seabrook Park. FSU concludes the regular season at 21-15 overall, 14-2 in conference, and 9-1 in division. The Lady Broncos enter the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships (May 4-6) as the regular season Southern Division champions and top seed from the division.

In game one, FSU held the Lady Falcons scoreless for the first six innings. Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) only allowed three hits, no walks, and no runs allowed prior to the seventh. Fayetteville State scored a solo run in the second and third innings.

Freshman infielder Courtney Pierre (Vanceboro, NC) hit a RBI single to the shortstop gap to bring junior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) home in the second. Senior centerfielder Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC) took base on a bunt and eventually rounded the bases to score in the third. Saint Augustine’s gave up five hits and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pierre produced a 2-RBI double and scored to contribute to the 5-0 FSU lead entering the seventh inning.

The Lady Falcons sparked a rally in the top of the seventh. SAU had four hits and three runs. Facing two outs, Meranda Zanni and Korey Hill both had a run batted in to keep hope alive. Akera McPhaul hit a single to centerfield, but was thrown out attempting to slide into second base.

Green earned the win with five strikeouts. Pierre finished with three RBIs, two hits, and a run scored. Knowles had seven putouts, two runs scored, and a hit.



SAU jumped out to a better offensive start in game two. The Lady Broncos faced a 5-2 deficit after three innings. Saint Augustine’s tacked on two hits and two runs, while holding FSU scoreless in the first inning. The Lady Falcons added a run off two hits in the top of the second. Junior third baseman Kortni Adams (Sabattus, ME) and junior shortstop Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ) both had RBIs in the bottom of the inning.

Saint Augustine’s had a 2-0 advantage in the third inning. FSU held the Lady Falcons without a run for the first time in the fourth. Fayetteville State tied the game 5-5 with five hits and three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Pierre doubled to left field to score junior leftfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) from second. Adams and Lee also batted in runs in the inning.

Neither team scored in the fifth. Saint Augustine’s had a hit, but no runs scored in the sixth. FSU erupted with six runs and five hits in the bottom of the sixth. Smith and Lee both tripled. Knowles, Green, Pierre, Smith, Adams, and Lee all scored for the Lady Broncos.

SAU managed to score a run in the seventh. However, Fayetteville State got the third out on a line out to Lee and clinched the division. Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) pitched almost six innings with two strikeouts in the victory. FSU repeats as regular season division champions.

Fayetteville State will travel to Petersburg, VA for the 2017 CIAA Softball Championships held May 4-6 at the Petersburg Sports Complex located at 100 Ballpark Road, Petersburg, VA 23803. FSU will enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed from the South taking on Virginia Union University or Virginia State University.
