Fayetteville State Drops Out of Winner's Bracket with a 13-3 Loss to Chowan

Salem, Va. - Fayetteville State (12-24 overall) fell behind early in its second game of the CIAA Softball Championship Tournament at Moyer Park (Salem, Va.). The Broncos eventually surrendered a 13-3 loss to the Northern Division No. 1 Seed Chowan (29-14 overall) in five innings. 

All-CIAA Outfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) led the effort with a team-high 2-for-3 at bats with one RBI. The Broncos scored three (3) runs on six hits but committed four errors. 

Chowan, who finished with 13 hits and 13 runs, scored the first four points of the game in the first inning.  

Fayetteville State battled back in the top of the fourth inning to trail 3-4. Courtney Pierre singled up the middle to bring in the Broncos first score of the game. Rachael Rodriguez advanced the next runner with a single to shortstop and Smith singled to centerfield for the third run. 

Chowan took advantage of eight (8) hits and two (2) errors in the bottom of the fourth to score nine (9) runs and secure the victory. 

Fayetteville State will now play Saint Augustine's (the South's No. 1 Seed) tomorrow at 12 noon in the double-elimination tournament.
