Fayetteville State Advances in CIAA Softball Winner’s Bracket with 10-3 Win over VSU

Salem, Va. – Fayetteville State (12-23 overall) loaded the scoreboard with six runs in the second inning of the CIAA Softball Championship opening rounds to defeat Virginia State 10-3. The Broncos will advance in the winner’s bracket at Moyer Park in Salem, Va. to face the CIAA North’s No. 1 Seed Chowan. VSU (17-16 overall) will fall to the loser’s bracket to play Shaw.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), along with its Softball Coaches & Sports Information Directors Association, announced the 2018 All-Conference Teams prior to the start of the championship tournament. The Broncos’ outfielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) was named to the All-CIAA First Team while catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Ramseur, N.C.) made the Second Team.

Nikki Brown, who was 3-for-4 at bat, hit a single to right center in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Brittany Lee followed with a triple to allow three more Broncos to score and set the game at 5-2. Goins put up a sacrifice fly which allowed Lee to make the sixth run of the outing.

Later in the fourth inning, Brown singled again through the right side for two more runners to score.

Ashlyn Zook recorded her ninth win (9-11) in the circle with seven (7) strikeouts and four (4) walks with 31 batters faced. Zook gave up six (6) hits, for which one was a home run, and three (3) runs in seven (7) innings and 121 pitches thrown.

The FSU-Chowan matchup is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
