Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team defeated Elizabeth City State University (9-1) and Livingstone College (8-0) during the Senior Day contest held Saturday, April 29th at Seabrook Park. FSU improves to 19-15 overall, 12-2 in the conference, and 7-1 in the Southern Division.

The Lady Vikings opened game one with three hits and a run scored in the first inning. Kayley Surrento singled and scored the only run for ECSU. Junior left fielder Maggie Smith (Fayetteville, NC) smacked an inside the park homerun with three RBIs. Junior first baseman HaLee Knowles (Wallace, NC) and junior catcher Shi-Cara Goins (Asheboro, NC) both rounded the bases off the hit from Smith.

Freshman third baseman Courtney Pierre (Vanceboro, NC) stole home for a run scored in the second. FSU tacked on two hits and two runs in the bottom of the third. Elizabeth City State trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.

Fayetteville State forced the Lady Vikings to tap out with four hits and three runs in the fifth. Smith had a 2-RBI double to bring home Knowles and Goins again. Pierre hit a game winning RBI single to score Smith and end the game 9-1 due to the NCAA eight run rule.

Senior pitcher Kyrin Walker (Carthage, NC) shined with six strikeouts and only hits and one run allowed. She pitched all five innings. Goins, Smith, and Pierre all had two hits. Smith scored three runs along with six RBIs.

Between games FSU Director of Athletics Anthony Bennett along with head coach Jackie Stickley recognized seniors Ivory Gladden (Greensboro, NC), Kyrin Walker, and Zoe Howard (Hampstead, NC) on behalf of Fayetteville State Athletics. All seniors received a customized self-poster and an imported Hawaiian lei courtesy team tradition of Coach Stickley. In the name of sportsmanship, Elizabeth City State seniors were also acknowledged during the ceremony.



The Lady Broncos dominated game two versus Livingstone. FSU scored at least one run in all five innings, including four runs in the third. The Lady Blue Bears were not only held scoreless, but only produced one hit in five innings of play.

Junior pitcher Carley Green (Fayetteville, NC) split time with Howard against LC. Green earned the win with five strikeouts, one walk, and no hits allowed in three innings pitched. Howard capped the contest with four Ks and one hit. She also scored the final run of the game with an inside the park homerun in the top of the fifth.

Livingstone trailed 9-0 entering the bottom of the fifth. The first two batters struck out. MonaLisa Paulk earned the one hit of the day off a bunt in the last inning. Alexis Smoot popped up to junior shortstop Brittany Lee (Newton, NJ) to wrap the game.

FSU will take on Saint Augustine’s University on Sunday, April 30th at Seabrook Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon. This divisional doubleheader will decide the CIAA Southern Division title for the regular season. This will also be the final home games of the season for the Lady Broncos.
