Fayetteville State Drops Critical Divisional Match-up to Saint Augustine’s

Raleigh, N.C. – The Saint Augustine’s Falcons won the CIAA Southern Division title with a pair of wins over Fayetteville State in Lions Park. The Broncos (11-23 overall, 10-6 CIAA, 7-3 South) battled closely in an emotional first game, falling 9-7.  St. Augustine’s ran away with the championship in the second game with a 10-2 victory in five innings.

FSU had a game-high 12 hits with 7 RBI but paid dearly for the 4 errors. The Broncos finished with a doubleheader total of 16 hits and five fielding mishaps.

Fayetteville State scored three runs with five hits in the second inning to open the twinbill. Nikki Brown singled to right centerfield which allowed Ashlyn Zook, who led off with a single, to score. Rachel Rodriguez singled on a bunt to bring home the second score and Brittany Lee put up a sacrifice fly to allow the third run.

Saint Augustine’s took over the game in the third inning with eight plate appearances that led to five runs on four hits and two errors.

Brittany Lee hit a double to left field for a run in the fourth inning to keep the Broncos within striking distance to the Falcons, 5-4.

SAU extended its lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fourth with three hits and two fielding errors. A home run in the fifth inning made the score 9-4.

FSU regained some composure in the sixth inning when Rodriguez hit a 2-run homer over the left field fence to trail 9-6.



In the top of the seventh, Madison Mendoza stood on second base after hitting a double to left center. Zook gave way for her to return home and a 9-7 score with a double of her own. An emotion strikeout and two defensive stops ended the game.

Saint Augustine’s capitalized on its momentum going into the regular season finale with a 7-0 lead after two innings. The Falcons had six hits and four runs in the first inning and four hits with three runs in the second.

Rodriguez, who hit a triple into right field, scored the Broncos first run in the third inning on a Maggie Smith single. FSU’s second run came in the fourth Shi-Cara Goings scored on a wild pitch.

The Falcons scored three extra runs in the fourth for the game-winning 10-2 score. The runs came off three hits and one fielding error.

Fayetteville State will enter the CIAA Championship Tournament as the South’s No. 2 seed. The Broncos will face the Northern Division’s No. 3 seed [unofficially Virginia State or Bowie State] in Salem, Va. at the Moyer Park on Monday, April 30th at 2:30 p.m.
